Best Messaging Strategy for Emailing Coaches (3 Step Method)

Struggle to get college coaches to respond? This is the most effective messaging strategy you need to try today!

The method I’m about to describe below has brought great success to our clients.

If you stay committed to it and follow the main principles, I guarantee that you can find similar success.

Coaches Get Bombarded

In a typical day, most college coaches will receive 100’s of messages.

That is why your message needs to stand out from the pack!

On top of that, coaches have a team to coach and a family to feed. They have busy lives!

Time is so valuable to them. Remember that. It will come in handy when constructing your messages.

You need to get right to the point and catch their eye.

The 3 Step Messaging Strategy

To maximize the potential of this strategy we will break it down in to 3 steps or 3 emails.

If constructed wisely, it will only take 1 email to have a successful interaction with the coach.

However, based on experience, I find most student-athletes have to extend in to steps 2 and 3.

Realize that is completely normal and do not get discouraged. Let’s dive in to it!

Message 1: The “Home Run”

The first message is the most important because it sets the tone for future conversations.

To begin, this email needs to catch the eye of the coach and draw them in to learning more about you.

The subject line is key! It should be irresistible to click on. You want the coach to at least reach your information and highlight tape.

Within the message you will be including:

Don’t forget to organize everything accordingly and break up chunks of text. You want the email to be easy to follow and read.

Coaches will be skimming for things they like to see, not reading whole paragraphs of text.

I’m assuming you have some basic knowledge on what to include in an email to a coach. If not, check out our article about that here.

Message 2: Acknowledgement

Remember, only go to this step if you did not receive a response on the first email.

This is where the 3 step strategy starts to take form.

So if three days pass and you still have not received an email back from the coach you’ll want to follow up with them.

We call this the “Acknowledgement” email.

Quick side note: pay attention to a coaches schedule before emailing them

To begin, you acknowledge the first message that you sent. This shows them that you are truly interested, but make sure to be respectful.

Next, you’ll want to spark their interest. Include something that really draws them in.

This could be an award you received, amazing play you made, or an impressive stat you had.

Make sure you change this email up from the first one. If you completely repeat yourself the coach won’t even read through it (assuming they saw the first one).

Be creative, give them a reason to respond!

Message 3: Last Straw Attempt

If you sent the first two emails and still haven’t gotten a response then move on to this step.

This is the last time you’ll attempt to directly get the coaches attention… (at least for now we have another trick up our sleeve should this not work)

Wait 1 week after sending the second email to try this.

First, you are going to do some extensive research on the coach. Find out everything about their coaching career and even their playing career.

Don’t get too personal as that could make things strange.

Anyway, once you have that info you are going to plant that in your email. People love talking about their life and they also like to be praised. BINGO!

Acknowledge the first two messages, throw in praise, and make them feel inclined to respond. Try a different way to message them as well.

Instead of emailing – send a direct message or write a personal letter.

I have a strong feeling that this will work for you.

Bonus Tips

Even if the coach never responds…still send them highlight tape, stats, and grade updates every several months.

They might not be interested now, but you don’t know about that in 6 months.
