These are some of the most common and popular ways.
Most of the basketball coaches that offered me scholarships saw my highlight tape first and then watched me live in AAU tournaments.
AAU Tournaments
One of the best ways to get recruited is by playing on a travel or AAU team. The team needs to be competing in national tournaments during live periods when coaches are present. Coaches find a lot of their players this way as they get to see you go up against stronger competition than what you typically face in high school.
More often than not, coaches will go to an AAU game intending to recruit one specific player and leave the game recruiting an entirely different athlete or both. That is why you should place a large emphasis on getting on a travel team that is the right fit for you.
The team should play in national tournaments that have strong competition, lots of coaches in attendance, and media coverage. You also want to have a large role on the team. Do not just try to find the best travel team as sitting on the bench won’t get you recruited.
You should be reaching out to college coaches to find out what tournaments they will be attending. This helps you build a relationship with them, while getting the chance to play in front of them.
Camps and Combines
Attending prospect camps held at colleges you’re interested in is a great way to get recruited. It’s even better to go to ones where lots of coaches from different divisions will be in attendance.
Keep in mind that most camps will allow anyone to attend, but that does not mean you should go to all of them. Your time is limited and the cost of these camps can add up fast.
By the time you’re ready to attend camps and combines, you should have a list of target schools in mind.
